Rory Ingham Quartet
Friday 21 May 2021
Kicking off the return of live jazz to Wakefield is the ever-popular Rory Ingham with a special quartet of up-and-coming musicians. Originally from Wakefield, Rory is a rising star of UK jazz, already recognised in the British Jazz Awards and Jazzwise magazine, as well as the youngest artist to be currently endorsed by the prestigious Michael Rath Trombones. Fresh from his 100 days of early-morning trombone workouts on Instagram, Rory will be joined by the similarly-lauded Yorkshire-born vibraphonist Jonny Mansfield. Melodic and intuitive contemporary jazz.

Another firm favourite at Wakefield Jazz, singer and double bass player Nicola Farnon is returning for an evening of classic jazz standards and a few originals, with an excellent northern-based quartet. Expect an engaging evening of melody and polish, with heartfelt solos from alto saxist Jim Corry, most recently seen here with Adrian Knowles’ Sound of ’59.

Improvisation, openness and interplay will be the watchwords in this collaboration between Wakefield Jazz promoter Pete Rosser and Leeds-based multi-reeds virtuoso Richard Ormrod (aka Stanley Quarantine on Bandcamp), augmented by Halifax bassist Paul Baxter. With a nod to the ground-breaking Giuffre-Bley-Swallow trio of the early 1960s, there will be Latin American protest songs, South African township jazz, Monk-ish explorations and some catchy originals, all played with humour and intensity. As with all the best jazz, expect the unexpected.
Richard Ormrod – clarinet/baritone sax/guitar
Pete Rosser – piano
Paul Baxter – bass
