Whitehead / Gee Quartet - supported by singer Lorraine Cowburn accompanied by guitarist Gary Boyle

(Friday 1 June)

Return of a highlight band from the Gemma Sykes tribute concert.

This gig is the climax of Wakefield Jazz's 25th year. To celebrate this, Jonathan Gee has been commissioned to write a piece (working title Wakefield Silver) to be premiered on this occasion. We are delighted he has agreed to do this and look forward immensely to hearing it.

This group of musicians came together for a short set in May 2011 when a charity concert placed them on the same bill. Their interaction was so electric that they had to be asked back for a full gig. Amazingly they agreed and were available tonight - a coup for Wakefield Jazz.

All are band-leaders in their own right. They can co-operate at the drop of a hat and their combined experience makes marvellous music inevitable.

Come and encourage them to recreate the magic once more for a full two hours.

Alan Barnes Art Trip
(Friday 5 October)

The ever popular Alan plays the music of Art Pepper with the Craig Milverton Trio
.

One of the greatest alto players of the 50s 60s and 70s, Art had a troubled career which was interrupted by drug addiction and consequent prison sentences. Nevertheless some of the most memorable albums of the time - "Art Pepper + 11", " Smack Up", "Living Legend", "Meets the Rhythm Section" - are his legacy. Alan revisits and revoices that music. Craig was voted Jazz Pianist of the Year at the 2010 British Jazz Awards.

Ben Crosland's Brass Group

Suite inspired by works at Yorkshire Sculpture Park rouses sponsorship.

(
Friday 19 October)

The Brass Group has grown out of Threeway, Crosland's trio which explores the possibilities in a group without drums. It was formed in 2010 to record and perform Ben's new set of compositions, "An Open Place" commissioned for the 20th Marsden Jazz Festival and inspired by sculptures at the Y S P.

We are grateful to a sponsor who has made this concert possible for us. This stellar sextet retains the same intimacy and subtlety as the trio whilst the larger instrumentation provides Crosland with a broader compositional palette to develop the colours and textures of his pieces with rich voicings and imaginative ensemble writing. The improvisational skill and creativity of these great soloists are a given.

Ben Crosland - bass
Steve Lodder - piano and keyboard
Steve Waterman - trumpet and flugel
Marti Shaw - trumpet and flugel
Mark Nightingale - trombone
Barnaby Dickinson - trombones

The John Law Trio

Remarkably popular pianist returns for another exceptional performance.

(Friday 26 October)

John Law is back with a trio on the Three Leaps of the Gazelle tour playing a mixture of his own compositions and clever arrangements of others - his first collaboration with Yuri Goloubev.

"World class pianist John Law's new trio is as melodic, accessible and catchy as anyone in the crowded piano trio sector." - Phil Johnson, Independent on Sunday.

This gig is supported by a Jazz Services touring grant.

Tina May Band

(Friday 2 November) - Ticketed gig

With support from Louise Gibbs with the Mark Donlon Trio
(from 7.30pm)

International singer and her favourite accompanist offer a night of sophistication.

As popular in France as she is in the UK, Tina has also recorded in the USA with Ray Bryant among others. Tonight she brings her life-long friend and musical partner Nikki Iles to present an exemplar of the art of jazz.

"Tina May and Nikki Iles have a rapport that takes a partnership between singer and pianist to a stage far beyond mere voice plus accompaniment. A distinctive atmosphere surrounds everything they do together, a kind of wistfulness, even at the most lively moments." - Kenny Mathieson, Scotsman.

Enrico Pieranunzi Trio

(Friday 16 November) - Ticketed gig

Italy's world famous equivalent to Keith Jarrett comes to Wakefield.

Enrico has had an illustrious career in Classical music and Jazz since the 1970s when he recorded the first of over 70 CDs. He has played with all the Jazz greats and in venues such as Birdland and The Village Vanguard where he also recorded. He was given "Best European Musician Award" (1997), and his CD "Live in Paris" is included in Downbeat's best CDs of the decade 2000 - 2010. Yet he is almost unknown in the UK. This is a rare opportunity to hear him in a local club setting - not to be missed.

"Pieranunzi is a pianist of intense lyricism, able to swing with energy and freshness and, at the same time, never losing his poetic capacity. His music sings." - Nat Hentoff.

Enrico Pieranunzi - piano
Pete Turner - bass
Dave Walsh - drums

Nicolas Meier Quintet

(Friday 23 November)

Amazing Swiss guitarist returns to promote his new CD.

Nicolas has the facility to play fluent music in acoustic or electric guitar styles and to replicate that on related instruments. His entertainment value is terrific as his last appearance at Wakefield attested. This band can only enhance our enjoyment as we have a trio of superlative musicians to drive him along. The occasional addition of Pat Bettison's harmonica and Demi Garcia's percussion are superb bonuses.

Nicolas Meier - acoustic guitars, glissentar and baglama
Lizzie Ball - violin
Pat Bettison - bass & harmonica
Asaf Sirkis - drums
Demi Garcia - percussion

Latest CD: Breeze and Journey but new CD will be ready for this tour.
