Tim
Whitehead's "Personal Standards" Band
With support from the Declan Forde Quartet from 7:30pm (Friday 1st April) One of the highlights of the last Scarborough Festival was a set by this band. Tonight they play the same set, Colour Beginnings, a specially composed suite shortlisted for 2010 Composer Awards. The project is the culmination of hours spent by Tim in the archives of Tate Britain, as artist in residence, viewing watercolour sketches by JMW Turner. He finally chose a few , which we'll see on a screen tonight, in front of which he opened his mind and improvised freely. The recordings of these meanderings were then tamed, committed to paper and arranged for a quartet. The pieces are a remarkable response to the tone colours and textures Turner was experimenting with in the sketches - and remarkable music. The ideal collaborator for this music was Liam Noble whose piano playing can follow the wildest of themes and develop them in his own solos. Don't let the arcane origins of this project mislead you - you will hear jazz of the highest order with plenty to entertain and excite. "Whitehead is one of the most creative, exciting and passionate saxophonists in Europe and also one of the finest small-group composers'." - Ian Carr (A Rough Guide) Tim Whitehead - tenor sax Liam Noble - piano Pat Bettison - bass Milo Fell - drums Latest CD: Colour Beginnings Web: www.timwhitehead.co.uk |

Jazz
Yorkshire Futures 2 Double Bill - Matt Anderson Quartet and Aron Kyne's Yoruba (Friday 8th April) These two bandleaders have been selected by Jazz Yorkshire for support as they get their careers in music underway. This gig is one of those means of support. Matt Anderson Quartet A North Yorkshireman, Matt graduated from Leeds College with a first and has been voted Jazz Yorkshire "Young Musician of the Year" in the 2010 Jazz Awards. His playing and writing are both sophisticated and fluent. No wonder he held a chair in almost all the College bands and more besides. He has been commissioned by Creative North Yorkshire to write a suite: "Songs of the Ridings" Matt Anderson - tenor sax Aubin Vanns - guitar John Marley - bass Sam Gardner - drums Yoruba Aron is a fan of Latin music and writes modern tunes in that genre for his band to play. Yoruba has a full-on Salsa-like sound and a selection of super soloists to hit the jazz requirement. If you have trouble staying still when those Cuban rhythms start then you'll have ants in your pants tonight. "Yoruba did Latin-Jazz with a creativity far beyond the call of duty" - Brian Priestly (Jazz UK) Aron Kyne - piano Greg Nicholas - trumpet and flugel Ben Lowman - alto sax Jonathan Waugh - tenor sax Sam Vicary - bass guitar Ali Mac - percussion Tim Carter - drums Latest CD: Both bands will record a CD as the culmination of their project with Jazz Yorkshire Web: www.MySpace.com/yorubaleeds and www.myspace.com/mattandersonsax |

Magic
Hat Ensemble
(Friday 15 April) Formed in Manchester in 2006 this band has now broken onto the National scene through their relentlessly humorous approach to making listenable music intriguing. Tipping
their hat to the jazz greats along the way the band are renowned for re-workings
of many classic jazz tunes employing the use of metric modulations, odd
time signatures and blistering solos. This means you know what they're
playing but you're not sure how (or sometimes why) they made it sound
like that. Great individual playing and a very cool ensemble sound indeed! Bill Kyle the Jazz Bar (Edinbugh) Steve

Sarah
Ellen Hughes Band with Dave O'Higgins
Rory Ingham (trombone) Quartet play a support set from 7:30pm (Friday 13 May) Sarah Ellen Hughes is a highly active Jazz Singer based in London from where she runs several bands including a vocal soul band, a big band and two jazz quartets including this one (but not usually with Dave O'Higgins who guested on her album). Having worked as NYJO's principal singer (and occasional flute player) she won last year's International Jazz Singing Competition in Lithuania "Jazz Voices". She writes for the reputable London Jazz Blog and also her own amusing blog. Sarah Ellen Hughes emerges as an astonishingly assured singer. She has an engaging personality. She sings with rhythmic drive but also rhythmic freedom, surprising versatility across a range of styles, and a wonderful sense of phrasing. Sebastian Scotney (London Jazz) Sarah

Reuben
Fowler Septet / Emma Smith Quartet Double Bill
(Friday 20 May) Since sons of Wakefield Reuben Fowler and Matt Robinson went to complete their musical education in London they have mixed with other wonderful musicians including those of NYJO with whom they both play. Following Reuben and Matt's last masterful duo appearance in a support slot it was inevitable that they got a gig of their own. Here they bring a bunch of their best musical mates, including Emma Smith - NYJO's current featured singer , to show us just how far on they've moved. Two great bands for the value of one - guaranteed to be a sophisticated and entertaining evening. Both bands use the same majestic rhythm section including another Wakefield boy Tom. Reuben

gig will be at the club on SUNDAY 22 MAY. The music will begin at 3pm
and run until 8 or 9'ish. There will be a full bar and there will be food. |

Tommaso
Starace Quartet
With support from the Jonny Faull Quartet at 7:30pm (Friday 27 May) Milan-born Starace completed his musical training in Birmingham and the London Guildhall in the nineties. He has maintained a well-received presence in this country ever since - in fact he's a musician who really should have been featured at Wakefield sooner. Tommaso has collected a terrific band with which to support his exuberant and entertaining playing. He runs another band in Italy (for which Michele plays) and has already recorded four CDs. He is happy to play standards and works by Ennio Morricone or Michel Petrucciani but is particularly inspired by drama in image or words. This tour celebrates his latest recording "Blood and Champagne" on which the original tracks were inspired by books he had read - both relating courage in the face of immense difficulty. He describes the fear, pressure , suspense and adventure he wishes to convey from the words to his music - exciting in prospect. Anyone who has experienced a glissando of language on the streets of Italy will understand the utter exuberance with which Italian-born Starace attacks and runs with the language of music" Paul Medley (The Oxford Times) Tommaso

Lea
DeLaria Band
(Friday 3 June) How often does a stand-up comedian and cabaret / Broadway show singer grace the cover of Jazz UK? When the artist in question is also a full-on jazz singer with a personality to blow all the fuses. This brief biog. fits American Lea DeLaria who we introduce to Wakefield tonight - be prepared for anything. She is as at home in the New York club Smoke as she is at the Pizza Express London and we are thrilled to present this entertainer with 25 years experience in putting cats amongst pigeons. Accompanied by a tremendous trio led by Janette Mason, who has twice entranced Wakefield in her own right, this partnership is meant to be and shows what a sensitive and versatile player Janette is. "...a thorn in the side of those with both neo-con and right on orthodoxies." John Fordham - The Guardian Lea

Matt
Roberts 'Miles' sextet
With support from Will Howard / Declan Forde Quintet at 7:30pm (Friday 17 June) This band was put together before Matt left Leeds to work in London. He now runs a big band and is a member of an immensely popuIar "dub" band. This project has undergone a couple of changes of personnel and the repertoire now ranges more widely through Miles Davis music but it is such a popular and successful band that local promoters have demanded its return. Nick
Svarc Trio (Friday 1 July) Nick is an immensely accomplished guitarist well known on the London scene but, thankfully, not yet tempted to move his Northern base. He runs an organ trio as well as this band and has an uncanny ability to play Jon Scofield numbers with brilliant accuracy of sound and skill. A fittingly hard-hitting climax to our Summer Season.
