Tim
Kliphuis Trio with Dave Newton
Support from singer Josie Smith’s Quintet at 7:30pm (Friday 23 April 2010) Tim’s versatile violin playing was introduced to Wakefield two years ago with Pat McCarthy and Len Skeat completing the trio. His jazz credentials and entertaining style were immediately apparent and a return visit was inevitable. Now with Dave Newton to raise the jazz stakes further, this is guaranteed to be a concert of gently ear-caressing music. His gypsy jazz swing morphs into material with folk and classical overtones with consummate ease and Len Skeat (who played with Stephane Grapelli) will give sympathetic support throughout. Tim’s visit is part of a European tour and he moves from his homeland’s Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to five Northern UK dates before flying to Belgium. "His
freewheeling versatility and often playful lightness of touch were underpinned
by formidable control and attention to detail, enriching the foot-tapping
accessibility of his music with compelling virtuosic depth." - Sue
Wilson, The Scotsman Latest

Janette
Mason Trio
Friday 30 April 2010 Janette is so busy writing film scores, arrangements for other artists (Ian Shaw, Lea Delaria) and playing for massive pop artists (Pulp, Suzanne Vega) that it is no wonder that her own band seems to take second place. Her critically successful album Din and Tonic is now followed by one named after a neurological disorder in which the sufferer loses control over an (apparently) independent limb – Dr Strangelove syndrome or Alien Left Hand. Her wild imagination and polished keyboard skills are showcased brilliantly. This concert will feature tunes from the six originals and two covers on the album as well as material from the jazz canon. Long term collaborators Simon Lea and Dudley Phillips complete a top drawer band. “An album fizzing with fresh ideas and delights, an exhilarating musical journey... with brilliantly original writing and inspired playing.” - Helen Mayhew, Jazz FM Janette Mason - piano Dudley Phillips - bass Pat Levett - drums Latest

Jamil
Sheriff Big Band (Première Performance)
(Friday 7 May 2010) A year ago Wakefield Jazz applied for PRS Foundation funding to commission one of our regional profile musicians, Jamil Sheriff, to write for a Big Band - an ambition he had harboured for some time. We were fortunate to be successful and this has facilitated tonight’s first ever performance of the resulting suite. Jamil has worked tirelessly to construct the music involved and has been mentored throughout by Tony Faulkner, the expert big band writer and arranger who has also worked with Alan Barnes. He sought, and received, funding to rehearse and later record the project - we shall be the beneficiaries of all that work. Jamil’s Octet has played twice previously at Wakefield when both the music and musicians were very well received. Featured in this bigger band are the cream of Leeds-based musicians with exciting soloists in every section. Many of them have appeared at Wakefield before. We are honoured to present this prestige project for its first public airing and are certain you will enjoy the modern big band sounds you will hear. “…balancing early influences of Horace Silver with a Wayne Shorter-like commitment to narrative composition… There is no shortage of fine soloists… immaculate taste… soul and lyricism" - The Guardian Jamil Sheriff - piano Garry Jackson - bass Jamie Taylor - guitar Eryl Roberts - drums Joel Purnell - tenor sax / EWI Tori Freestone - tenor sax / flute Simon Kaylor - baritone sax / flute Russell Henderson - alto sax / flute Kevin Holbrough - trombone Stuart Garside - trombone Chris Hibbert - trombone Kyle Shields - trombone Mark Chandler - trumpet / flugel Simon Beddoe - trumpet / flugel Sean Hollis - trumpet / flugel Simon Nixon - trumpet / flugel Latest CD: I Remember You - Octet (33 Records) Web:

Georgia
Mancio Quintet
(Friday 14 May 2010) In less than a decade of professional work award-winning jazz vocalist, Georgia Mancio, has established herself as one of the UK’s most important new artists. This has been compounded by appearances with Bobby McFerrin (2009 Meltdown and 2003 London Jazz Festival), Sheila Jordan and David Linx (Belgium 2006), Frank Griffith Nonet, Liane Carroll, Bobby Wellins and Ian Shaw, Norma Winstone and Anita Wardell (The True Jazz Voice 2008); a first prize win at the 2005 Brussels International Young Jazz Singers’ Competition; 4 star live reviews from both The Standard and The Guardian and numerous sell-out performance dates and tours in the UK, Poland, Italy, Portugal and Belgium. Tonight Georgia returns to Wakefield Jazz Club as part of the 17 date tour celebrating her third album, Silhouette (Roomspin Records). With elements of her acclaimed 2008 release, Trapeze, the new album includes originals co-written by herself and pianists, Tim Lapthorn and Kate Williams, alongside an approved lyric to Pat Metheny's classic Question And Answer, jazz standards and songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Tom Waits. Jez
Franks' Compassionate Dictatorship With support from John Arnesson's Full Cicle at 7:30pm (Friday 21 May 2010) If you saw Loz Speyer’s band Timezone last May you may remember the hard-working guitarist who contributed the exciting solos. That was Jez Franks, also a member of Centreline more recently at Wakefield. He has been a feature of the Leeds scene for years and still teaches at LCM but has moved to London to permit wider collaborations and to form this band. His partner Tori Freestone is not only featured on sax in the band but has also been his writing companion since 1993. Now joined by two of London’s most sought after musicians, Copenhagen-born Jasper Hoiby and the almost ubiquitous James Maddren, the outfit has taken a distinct step forward to record their second CD Cash Cow. They are as good a representative of BritJazz as there is at the moment. "...this is a muscular but intelligent band playing immediately accessible, spirited but, carefully wrought music” - Chris Parker, Jazz Reviewn Jez Franks - guitar Tori Freestone - tenor sax Jasper Hoiby - bass James Maddren - drums Latest CD: Cash Cow Web: www.compassionatedictatorship.co.uk Top |

If
Destroyed Still True (IDST) (Friday 28 May 2010) This Leeds-based band has come a long way since winning the Jazz Services Promoters’ Choice Award in 2008. They have been gigging regularly ever since and their infectious music and personalities have appealed to audiences all over the country. We are delighted to welcome them back to Wakefield. They are currently on a Jazz Services tour of 13 gigs through April and May of which this is almost the last. This compatible set of musicians includes several writing talents which contributes to good entertaining performances. Simon Kaylor is the most versatile and in demand for commercial, big band and contemporary playing. Tommy, a rare drumming talent, band leader and composer in one, is currently writing music for a bigger ensemble with voices which we may hear next year. Simon B, Johnny and Tommy are all Jazz Entrepreneurs presenting gigs in Leeds as well as playing in a number of bands. Seth recently opened for The Elysian quartet in Wakefield playing a solo set of improvised bass. Geoff
Gascoyne's Pop Bop Band with Trudy
Kerr
(Friday 4 June 2010) This tour celebrates a series of inventive arrangements by Geoff of his favourite tunes associated with pop artists from the past 30 years. His new band still features Sebastiaan de Krom but to add Jim Mullen was an inspired move. Greek god, Andy Panayi, will also add fiery solos to keep the tail twisting. Trudy only sings once on the album but, will be pressed for more tonight. A jazz experience where you’ll (probably) know all the tunes; the challenge will be to recall the original artists who recorded them. Phil Meadows Quartet
(Friday 2 July 2010) Phil grew up in Manchester and studied at Leeds College of Music. His chosen accomplices for this band are all friends from the other side of the Pennines. Their original music combines influences from the great John Coltrane, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner and Ornette Coleman through to the Post-Punk jazz movement scene which features the likes of Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland. The original compositions combine a mixture of intense grooves and melodic counterpoint with minimalist influences which are the bedrock for improvisational interplay.
